Family friendly, simple Valentines Day ideas

So we have barely taken the Christmas decorations down and in the world of retail the hearts and flowers are already out (we even spotted Easter Eggs already..), which means that Valentines Day on the horizon.

We love Valentines Day here at Party HQ as it gives us the chance to get all loved up with our range of romantic valentine balloons, however it can feel like just another retail opportunity and another chance for savvy retailers to get you to spend your money. This got me thinking and I realised that unlike Christmas I had no idea of the real story behind all the commercial cards and flowers so I looked up St Valentine and to be honest after an hour of googling I was not much clearer! It seems that St Valentine was a bit of secretive chappy and the real origins of Valentines Day seem shrouded in mystery.

I use the Valentines Day as an opportunity to pause and tell my nearest and dearest what they mean to me. In the business of day to day life sometimes how we really feel can go unsaid so it is nice to take some time and appreciate the people we have and more importantly tell them how much we love them.

I know traditionally Valentines has been a day for lovers, but for me, a mum of two as well as a partner and a daughter it has moved on from that and it now represents a chance for me to make a fuss of all the loves in my life and a chance for me to show them how much I love them.

I have to confess Valentines Day in our house is not an elaborate or an expensive affair, running a business, and a household doesn’t leave me much time to plan lavish events and anyway I don’t believe things need to be elaborate, keep it honest and simple that’s my motto for most things in life.

Here are a few of my simple ideas for spreading a little love on Valentines Day

Make a Valentines Tree – this is something we have created at home, in fact we used a miniature real Christmas tree that we had bought in a pot, but you can use a branch or one of the small decorative trees you can buy. Decorate with hearts, trinkets and messages of love for each other. This is a cute idea that makes a nice decoration in the home for Valentines.

Valentine breakfast – I do this every Valentines for my two girls, usually heart shaped pancakes as they are their favourites, but you can make whatever is most popular in your house. I usually add valentine themed napkins and plates and a note telling them how much I love them.

Decorations – There are so many poms poms and garlands available at the moment and they make perfect valentine decorations and are easy to use. Hang a few in groups above the table and they will set the scene for a romantic Valentine dinner for two.

Handmade cards -  so much more personal than shop bought ones, homemade cards are the perfect way to show somebody how much you care. If you have children this is a lovely way to get them involved, they can send cards to their grandparents, siblings or even aunts and uncles.

Favourite meal – this may be an obvious one, but taking the time to cook a favourite meal for your special someone is a lovely way to celebrate the day.

Reasons why I love you jar- A personal favourite, this one works for all occasions, especially Mothers Day. Simply take a glass jar with a lid, decorate the outside if you wish and then fill it with reasons why you love that person. This is the most amazing gift to receive and makes a wonderful keepsake too.

Bake a cake – this is a simple and sweet way to show somebody that you care. Make it valentines themed by adding an icing sugar heart, or bake a red velvet cake, the perfect Valentines indulgence.

Send a Valentines balloon –this list would not be complete without a mention of our gorgeous personalised Valentines balloons. Our balloons are a great way of telling somebody you love them and they work brilliantly for all ages, young to old. Perfect to send as a gift if you can’t be with your valentine on the day, we make them with love and wrap them in a tissue lined box to be delivered on Valentines morning. You can shop our range of Valentines balloons here.
